Diane Foote BOOKLIST, January 1, 2011, Jenkins's artwork has enthusiasm to spare, and he has great fun with the "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" ending that has the tired chicks begging Mama to go to sleep and has Mama running wild herself: by painting her toenails and watching a TV romance. Young listeners will quickly learn and want to repeat the refrain, set off in large type and curving above chicks jumping on the bed, somersaulting through the air, and whacking each other with pillows: “Those chicks run wild! Grown-ups will enjoy the final scene, where “Mama runs wild, painting her toenails red, having a cup of tea, and watching Gone with the Wing. The chicks are fluffy and appealing Mama appears progressively more stern, as she looms larger in the doorway each time she must come back.

The story starts with our main family, the Hadleys, as their life is about to completely change. It was certainly fast paced and actually made for quite addictive reading but I felt like the world building needed something more. I must admit that I have mixed feelings with this book. Set in an alternative UK the story revolves around one particular family as they embark on a period of enforced slavery. The Gilded Cage is an unusual and interesting story. I have read the Fallen Series and loved it, except you know the ending. So this is not the first time I have come across Lauren Kate. I decided I would review these books together considering they are in a series and I’ll probably just end up talking about them together rather than keeping Teardrop and Waterfall in separate reviews.
